Rocky Cherry has the best baseball name I’ve seen in a while. According to MLB.com, it’s not even a nickname. Mr. Cherry’s full name is Rocky Ty Cherry.
Cherry made his Major League debut for the Chicago Cubs on April 23, 2007. He made 12 relief appearances, striking out 13 in 15 innings. On Aug. 31, he was traded with third baseman Scott Moore to the Baltimore Orioles for one-time New York Mets starting pitcher Steve Trachsel.
Cherry didn’t have as much luck in the American League. In 10 relief appearances, he gave up 14 runs on 17 hits over 16 1/3 innings. He’s in camp this spring trying to earn a spot in Baltimore’s bullpen.
