Monday Mail: Mostly ex-Mets edition
Today’s mail brought five signed cards: four ex-Mets and a current Marlin.
First, the older guys:
Craig Anderson went 3-17 for the New York Mets in 1962. Until Anthony Young came along, he had the longest losing streak in team history. I never saw Anderson pitch, but I’d guess he had to be pretty good — you don’t leave a guy in the rotation long enough to lose 17 in a row if he’s awful. (Then again, these were the 1962 Mets.
)
John DeMerit finished a fairly undistinguished career with the 1962 Mets. Thanks to Topps, though, he has one interesting footnote. His card, #4 in the 1962 baseball set, is the first-ever Mets baseball card.
The newer guys:
Shawn Gilbert had a couple of cups of coffee with the Mets in 1997 and 1998. He’d also go on to play in the majors for the Cardinals and Dodgers as a utility player. I actually remember him best as a Scranton Wilkes-Barre Red Baron, since my family used to go there for vacations and I saw him play in person in 1994 and 1995.
David Segui was a baseball journeyman, playing for seven different big league teams from 1990 - 2004. With the Mets in 1994, he was a light-hitting first baseman with a slick glove, and they just don’t last too long.
The Marlin: Taylor Tankersley may have the ugliest autograph of anybody I’ve gotten this year.
