Card of the Day: 1996 Donruss Press Proof Carl Everett

carl-everett-press-proofToday’s card is yet another find from the 3-for-$1 box at the local card shop. The first thing I noticed was the great shot of Carl Everett bunting. I tend to think of Carl as a slugger, but he had some speed and was even a bit of a stolen base threat early in his career.

I hope Carl returns to the Long Island Ducks this season, because I’d love to show him this card and see what he says. But he’ll be 38 in June, so I doubt Carl’s going to be suiting up in the green and orange this year. And since I already have a copy of his 1996 Donruss card in my Donruss binder, I was prepared to leave this one in the box.

Then I noticed the writing on the right-hand side of the card. I’ve never see a Press Proof parallel from this set before. The tiny writing in the foil says “1st 2000,” so I guess this was Donruss’ equivalent to the Topps Stadium Club 1st Day Production cards.

I’m not sure if the card companies had reined in production by 1996, so I have no clue how limitied these Press Proof cards really are. But since this one features a cool photo of a player that I like, I knew I had to get it.
