Star Wars Autograph: Howie Weed

Howie-Weed

Howie Weed is a special effects artist with Industrial Light & Magic, not to mention an occasional actor. He started out in the film business as a model maker on Gremlins, and also did work on The Witches of Eastwick, Ghostbusters II, RoboCop 2, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, Star Trek:Generations, Men In Black and A.I., among others.

He also contributed to the 1997 Special Edition release of the original Star Wars trilogy. He portrayed a pair of aliens in the modified cantina sequence in Star Wars. Weed also created and portrayed the wampa creature that replaced the original monster in the Empire Strikes Back.

This must have been the week for long-lost autograph requests to return home. Yesterday, I found a 9×12 SASE in my mailbox. That was a bit of a surprise, since I haven’t mailed out any 8×10 photos for autograph requests in a long time. My letter to Howie Weed went in the mail on Jan. 16, 2007. He must have found a stack of old mail recently; a few Rebelscum.com forum members also reported getting autographs from Mr. Weed recently.

  1. That’s pretty cool.

  2. That’s awesome. I can’t believe it too 2 years.

I just missed Darth Maul here in town – I wish I had known about it sooner.

    • Ray Park was one of my first Star Wars autographs. I met him at the Big Apple Comic Con in 2005, I think. He was pretty cool, but he’s got an ugly autograph.
