Hot Stove Season Underway

The Yankees haven’t even had their victory parade yet, but the hot stove season is already in full swing. We’ve had one significant contract signing already, plus a few trades.

So far, this player movement hasn’t brought anybody to the Mets, unfortunately.

J.J. Putz

J.J. Putz

But New York’s other team will get a few notes in tomorrow’s newspapers anyway.

  • The Mets have reportedly told reliever J.J. Putz that they will not pick up his 2010 option, which is either worth $8.6 or $9.1 million.
  • Carlos Delgado and Brian Schneider have officially filed for free agency. Putz, Fernando Tatis, Alex Cora, Gary Sheffield, Ramon Martinez and Elmer Dessens are also eligible. (Jeff Francoeur, Angel Pagan, Cory Sullivan, Jeremy Reed, Pedro Feliciano, John Maine, Brian Stokes and Sean Green are arbitration eligible, which means the Mets have until mid-December to sign them, offer them arbitration or cut them loose to become free agents)
  • Minor league third baseman Shawn Bowman has been added to the 40-man roster.

I would like to see Putz come back next season, if only so Mets fans gain something from last year’s trade of Endy Chavez and prospects beyond the departure of Aaron Heilman.

I understand that a team can’t afford to tie up $9 million with a setup man coming back from injuries. And I understand that he probably wants to be a closer again. So I know his Mets’ days are probably over. But I’d still like to see the Mets offer him an incentive-based deal.

Maybe I just want him to come back because he had a cool intro sequence when the Mets brought him into the game.

Except for Alex Cora, I don’t expect to see the Mets bring back any of their free agents. And really, Delgado is the only other one I wouldn’t mind seeing in a Mets’ uniform next year. And I’d bet at least a couple of the arbitration-eligible players get non-tendered.

It should be an interesting off-season. I just hope that it goes better than the 2009 baseball season did for the Mets.

  1. I liked JJ, he was a nice guy, and like you said, this trade turns out to be a waste of prospects pretty much. and I want cora back, great leader and a decent player. and I rele want john maine back in NY. we dont really have much other starters, and i always liked johnnie maine. and in my opinion noo delgado!

    • Of the arbitration eligibles, I’d like to see Maine, Francoeur, Feliciano, Pagan and Stokes come back. I’ve seen all I want to of Sean Green and I just don’t care one way or the other about Reed and Sullivan.

I don’t want to count on Delgado next year, but if he’s healthy I think he’d be worth a one-year, incentive-laden deal. I think he’s going to find an American League team and be a quality DH, though.
